Within the next few years, there will be more than 100,000 new computer science careers! Educators need to do more to prepare and push students forward to succeed in this new future. In my classroom, I’ve noticed that students show high levels of engagement when they use technology and when they are problem solving, especially for relatable health problems. Our 8th grade graduation this year was at a different school’s auditorium. When students asked for directions to the bathroom, many found it hard to visual and follow simple left/right directions. Using iPads to write codes (directions) will allow students to become better at following and giving directions, ultimately conceptualizing the importance of coding. As they practice creating their own codes to run basic programs, they will be challenged to write high level codes using the EV3 LEGO Robots App on their iPads, which will program robots to complete a series of functions that can be used to solve problem for health science that include physical disabilities, disease detection/extraction, and much more. This will enhance not only our classroom academic ownership, but a sense of accountability and pride to solve health problems that are common for many families.
