My first grade classroom is composed of 26 students. At the school 94.7% of students are low-income. It's a fairly mixed race school, as 23.2% are African-American, 47.3% are Hispanic, 28.1% are White, and 0.6% Asian. We are located on the South Side of Chicago and a lot of these students come from homes where they don't have their own things. I have spent at least $500 easily trying to brighten my classroom and give students their own supplies so they can feel a sense of ownership in their learning. Much of what was left for me in the classroom is old school and no longer fits the needs of the students I have now.
