Why does having culturally relevant texts matter so much? Imagine being a student of color and one whose family speaks a language other than English...now imagine how powerful it would be if the books your teacher read to you and that were available to you in your school were about people who looked like you...lived in a neighborhood like yours...spoke languages other than English...and was set in a contemporary time? Too often students do not see themselves in the text, and this is critical to academic achievement and self-worth.
Current research is crystal clear on the impact of culturally relevant books that provide "windows" and "mirrors" for students who might not otherwise engage and focus on a text. I will be able to reach students and connect them with these texts in a way that I cannot with my current book sets. Their reading comprehension will grow, but even more importantly, their interest in reading will expand as well when they see that there are books out there that are meaningful to their lives.
