When students with special learning needs experience a classroom that is fit with all the manipulatives and resources they require to be successful in school they not only build a stronger academic foundation but also they are building confidence in themselves and their capabilities with learning. Instead of hearing "I can't" or "I don't know" we will start to hear "I can do this", "I know how to figure this out" and "maybe I can try this a different way". Giving these students a unique look on how we can learn in various ways can help to build a basis for understanding that not everyone learns in a traditional way.
We can generate a new age of outside the box learners. Included in my wish list are flexible seating options, Sensory materials, manipulatives, and teaching tools to help engage my students who find it hard to remain focused during instructions. Many students who have a disability do not have the tools within the general education classroom that allow them to get support they need in order to be successful, remain focused and on task and to participate in academic conversation. With these tools we will be able to utilize functional seating to make students with "wiggles" more at ease and comfortable in order for them to remain with the instruction during longer periods of time. It will allow for multi-exposure to curriculum and allowing for students to have the chance to take in what academic content they can with the different methods and tools used to learn.
