Currently, in my 7 engineering classes (about 175 students) there is NO technology used in our prototyping. Students follow the design process to identify a problem, generate multiple solutions, and develop a design. However, they lack the necessary technology to attempt to prototype their designs. They're left to use recycled materials, such as foamboard, plastic bottles, cardboard, and wood, to construct a semi-working model to showcase their design. This then regularly disrupts their testing and evaluation causing their prototypes to often underperform because of their lack of proper prototyping technologies. Unfortunately, many of my students become discouraged and lose their design confidence when their prototypes underperform in testing due to their lack of access to proper prototyping technologies.
