My speech room is already full of materials, such as flash cards and books, to enrich language. However, the new materials and supplies that I have requested are specifically geared toward my Early Language Learners, and students with unique language needs. About 1/2 of my students are on the Autism Spectrum, and could benefit from the use of hands-on activities in instruction. In my experience as a pediatric Speech Therapist, many students (not only those on the Autism Spectrum) benefit from the incorporation of manipulatives that they can engage with during therapy. My goal is to provide the most engaging and enriching speech therapy sessions possible. By using tangible, 3-D items, I will be able to use goal-oriented vocabulary and basic concepts into games and free-play. For example, I can put the items in a mystery box and have students take turns pulling out items and describing them. For my younger students, I can use tangible items with their speech-sound targets (i.e., "t" sound) in free play, to encourage them to practice their sound in a more naturalistic environment. I can't wait to share these amazing materials with my students.
