The students I work with are motivated to engage and learn when their environment is structured and their physical needs are met. They are coming from homes in poverty, we are a Title 1 school. The majority of the students I work with have mild/moderate disabilities, such as ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) or a learning disability. Some students are diagnosed with Autism. These students need the classroom structured in a way that provides them an outlet for their energy without being distracting to the classroom, as well as tools to help them stay focused and on task. They tend to get frustrated and give up easily on school work when they don't have a structure or when they need an outlet for their energy (things they can see and feel, such as a timer or visual schedule help provide structure). They struggle with everyday things, especially staying in their seat and not saying or doing things to distract other students and the classroom.
