My students need a place where they can feel comfortable to say my classroom is another place like "home" rather than another "dull" day at school. Now, yes they are exaggerating (they are 10-11 years old), but I would much rather have them dredge leaving at the end of each day because they love the classroom environment. Old desks and standard seating does not create a productive learning space for my 21st century learners. They need a space to produce their creative collaborative thinking and help motivate them throughout the day so that reading is not "boring". Having these flexible seating options will help my students stay motivated and ready to learn, within a 21st century classroom, with minimal behavioral issues. By having a variety of options for each student allows them to make a choice of how they will complete their work. When students are learning about ELA and Social Studies they have lots of independent work they need to complete to understand the curriculum and reach their goals. If they do not work well in one area they will have the freedom to move somewhere else that will accommodate their needs and help them feel recharged. Thus, the variety of flexible seating options will help impact their learning and behavioral choices: wobble stools, balance boards, and fold-up chairs. The stools will help the students who have the feeling of wanting to move while sitting at their desk. The fold-up chairs will help the students to relax comfortably anywhere around the room to read or complete their work at our low tables. The balance boards will help with strength, along with, moving freely at our stand-up desks. All of these options will help us create a 21st century learning space that accents the materials we already have.
