For the first time in 17 years, I will be teaching an AP-level class with my standard (major program) students. I KNOW that they can be successful, but I need King Lear and 2 other books to make it happen. We encourage students to take challenging classes in order to expose them to high academic standards. This has been a good thing, but it also means that many students entering AP classes are woefully unprepared to be faced with that level of academic challenge. It is difficult, regardless of anything else, to overcome both the lack of readiness and the fear that many of them associate with learning, but it is IMPOSSIBLE without challenging materials for them to read. They deserve to have their hands on books. That is what this project is all about. For those still-struggling readers, the reader strips lead to greater focus and greater confidence. Ideally, we would have a copy of every book for every student. For now, I am simply seeking class sets of these texts. We will use them to study literature (tinged with philosophy and history) and strive to understand complex ideas. My students will learn to analyze literature and write about it with intelligence and prosody. With your help, I will be able to lead them toward excellence and teach them the critical thinking and analytical skills they will need in college. Most importantly, these books will empower them, as they learn to recognize their own abilities and celebrate their very capable brains!
