For texts to truly serve as a mirror, the class library needs more contemporary and racially diverse texts. These award winning graphic novels reflect the myriad of identities in the classroom and allow students to access complex themes and host critical conversations with the visual design. In a truly equitable class, every student deserves meaningful and accessible content, no matter their reading fluency.
Graphic novels are a critical access tool for a linguistically, culturally, and neurologically diverse classroom. While some books can be purchased through the central city system, contemporary graphic novels by QBIPOC (Queer, Black, Indigenous, People of Color) were unavailable. This project will fill in those gaps. In a full public school ICT class, we often squeeze 34 kids and 2 teachers into our room, bean bag chairs offer the flexibility for kids to read in the hallway or take a sensory break to read. Please help this middle school class build a graphic novel library and reading space!
