My 12th graders are currently in the process of submitting their applications to universities and colleges around the country. They are experiencing the stresses and excitement that are typical of any senior in high school no matter where the location. However, my students face more hardships everyday than most do their entire lives. When even walking home requires strategic and safe decisions, it is extremely humbling to see that they can come to school every day with such positive attitudes and high goals for their future. My students go to a charter high school located in Los Angeles, California; in one of the most challenging and under-served communities in Los Angeles. Many of my students are second language learners. In spite of this, our school has managed to create a culture of high achievement, strong community, and life-preparation.
