Graphing calculators are an essential mathematics tool that supports student learning. Because we teach a high population of students who receive free and reduced lunch, it is unrealistic for us to expect or require our students to purchase their own graphing calculators. Graphing calculators will allow my students to discover the features of a variety of functions such as linear, exponential, quadratic, square root, absolute value, and trigonometric. With the aid of a graphing calculator, students will be better able to model the mathematics that they are learning in the classroom and apply it to real-world and everyday scenarios. In addition, my students can use these calculators on every major exam they take in high school including, the Regents exams that they need to pass to graduate and the SAT/ACT. The use of a graphing calculator throughout the school year, and not just on the day of the Regents exam, will greatly improve my students chances of earning a passing score. As a new high school, we are constantly growing and will be graduating our first class of seniors this year. We do not have nearly enough calculators to meet the needs of our growing population, meaning that each student will not have access to one on their Regents exam.
