I recently had a conversation with my sophomores about what they want to see in their English classes. I had some of the obligatory responses such as "nap time" and "no homework," but I was amazed (and pleasantly surprised) to hear that many of my students want to read a novel that would be meaningful to them. Virtually everything we read in class is out of our textbooks, as they're designed to be a comprehensive curriculum with complete texts built in. Although this is easy on my end, my students expressed that there's a definite difference between reading from a textbook and reading from a novel. I promised my students I would do my best to make this happen, so I started researching and realized that The Kite Runner would be a perfect addition to our curriculum. Having a class set of The Kite Runner would allow students the excitement of reading a modern novel while also introducing them to an authentic narrative about a culture they may have only heard about in the news. I would also incorporate nonfiction pieces about Afghanistan as well as poems from Afghani poets in order to round out our experience. By introducing a modern novel featuring experiences from a foreign culture, my students will be able to appreciate the differences between our cultures as well as how alike we truly are. The Kite Runner will be greatly appreciated by my students and they will be on their way to becoming global citizens through literature!
