It is my mission to make our classroom a comfortable and safe space where my students can work to advance their reading abilities. At our high school, only 29% of all students are reading on grade level. All of my 175 ninth graders (ages 13-17), are in my Intensive Reading class because they have a lot of reading growth to make this year. Not having passed the state reading test last year, it is crucial that they pass this year in order to ensure that they will be able to pass the tenth grade test, a graduation requirement. My students are up for the challenge! Because we learn best by practicing, the more we read, the better we become at it. As we have all experienced, reading something we find fascinating strengthens our passion and thirst for knowledge. I know that my students who claim to dislike reading only do so because they have not yet found a book transformational to their lives. I am confident that with the right books, my students will discover a love for reading.
