Like all five and six year olds, my students love to listen to stories being read aloud to them! I recently moved to a new classroom in a new school and have been building a classroom library by scouring thrift store for great books. I wish everyone could see the excitement in their faces as they look at a new book and notice that they are beginning to be able to read the words! They point out sight words they know and sound out short words while using the pictures as clues. It is an exciting time! I would love to have an extra person in the room just to sit with them and read! During center time, they use the classroom library as well as big over-sized books and leveled readers to read independently while I work with small groups. Having a listening center with engaging read-a-long books would foster a love of literature and support their emerging reading skills.
