My students are seniors enrolled in an urban public high school in New Mexico. They represent the diverse population of their state: Hispanic, Anglo, American Indian, African American, and Asian American groups. Our school qualifies for Title I funding, which means a large number of my students come from low income families. They are proud of their school and are known throughout the city for their close-knit, friendly student body. Generally, the students in this particular course (70 are enrolled for 2012-2013) have reading levels that vary from "beginning step" to "proficient" with very few "advanced" readers. About half of these students enter the senior year interested in pursuing post-secondary education. The students enrolled in this course work closely with our school's Forensic Science class in a number of collaborative projects.
