My students will interact with the materials I am requesting on a daily basis. Every day we do reading centers. During this time the students rotate in small groups to different areas of the classroom where they complete differentiated tasks to support and reinforce their learning. These centers include guided reading (where they read with me in a small group), independent or partner reading (in the classroom library), response to reading, writing, word study, and vocabulary. These materials will become regular activities at many of our centers.
Replacing worksheets with these hands-on activities will help my enthusiastic scholars to stay engaged and excited about learning to read all year long. One of my biggest goals as their teacher this year is to find more ways to keep my students excited to come to school each day. Integrating manipulatives like these into our daily routine is one way that I plan to do that. Another one of my goals is to have 100% of my scholars meet their annual growth goals on our standardized state reading assessment. I truly believe these materials will support my scholars' learning in a way that will further enable them to meet those goals and to leave my classroom at the end of the year as scholars who have a love for reading and learning and have the reading skills they need to be successful in second grade and beyond.
