This is my students' final year in middle school as they prepare to venture off into high school. I teach at a Title 1 inner city school, most of my students are recent immigrants, and about 92% receive a free or reduced lunch. Most of my students will be the first in their families to graduate from high school, let alone attend college. I want to make graduating high school and attending a four year university a reality for my 113 students. At the university level science courses are a requirement no matter the student’s major. The best way to set them up for success is to see how they use science in their daily lives, to think like scientists, and to be scientists. Without this exposure, they will be at a disadvantage not only on standardized tests, but also upon applying to jobs and college. School is the only place they'll get exposure to science and these opportunities.
