In an ever-changing world, students need more challenging tasks in the classroom to keep them actively engaged and learning. Reading textbooks and completing worksheets is necessary and beneficial, but in many cases, it just isn't enough. By providing students with time, space, and tools, their learning can really sky rocket through STEAM activities. I would love to offer my students time and the right supplies to explore science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics without the feeling that they will be tested or graded. Students will use their curiosity to drive innovation, persevere through failed attempts, and apply what they already know from books, movies, and the world around them to make 'magic' happen. The magic is in the learning. It's understanding what makes pulleys work, determining the design that creates the strongest bridge, creating whatever their hearts desire with magnets, designing paper frogs that can leap, and making sound by closing an electrical circuit. These discoveries are among the many activities my students will experience through trial and error as a result of the items requested. A rotating schedule will be created to allow partners to work with each of the activities in STEAM stations on a weekly basis and possibly after school opportunities. Students will be encouraged to choose a task from each activity and strive for success whether it is coding a video game with Bloxels, 'running' through a laser maze, observing potential energy changing to kinetic with a balloon-powered plane, or constructing a structure that can hold a considerable amount of weight. Students will be invited to share their creations and discoveries with their classmates as well as their parents via an online classroom portfolio. When STEAM time is up, we would use the storage drawers to organize our materials until the next 'magical' time.
