As an adolescent, my time in the art room was paramount to finding a voice and vision for my future. This same opportunity is what I want to provide for my students by way of having a fully stocked classroom and personal sketchbook per student. First and foremost, a multi-medium sketchbook serves as the gateway to students' learning in the art room. Regardless of the medium, students house the majority of their work in personal 9” by 12” sketchbooks. A bound sketchbook, rather than loose-leaf pages, also serves to neatly organize students’ work for reflections, sharing, and critiques in class. Additionally, these sketchbooks will be able to travel with students as we visit the MOMA or go outside. Ultimately, students’ sketchbooks are the foundation for their art-making. Whether we use these sketchbooks daily for material exploration or to house rough drafts for larger scale projects, without them, students' art experience will be lacking. My students are ready to dive into these art experiences, but without these materials, my classroom cannot support their needs. With these hardcover sketchbooks that have mixed-media pages, students will learn the basics before progressing to the heart of the course: social justice art. We spend a large part of the year learning about ourselves, our impacts in society and about the injustices in our immediate communities. Sketchbook in hand, we work together to answer this question: how does art create social justice? Make a donation today and join us on this journey of self-realizing and radical art-making.
