My students are high-spirited, hard working 5th graders who are on IEPS with disabilities ranging from learning disabilities to intellectual disabilities. They value the importance of working hard to get smart but need the physical aspects of a room that can provide organization for them and a venue for them to see their progress. As students in a low-income community, they face challenges every day, however they are ready to learn each time they walk through the door of a classroom that was created by erecting walls within a teachers lounge, the result: a large teacher lounge, a small room for English Language Learners, and 12A- the 5th grade special education resource room. The ELL students actually do not have a door to their room and have to enter through our classroom (a daily distraction, however we work with what we got!); there is no light switch in my classroom, in order to watch videos or use the overhead properly, I have to shut the lights to all three rooms.
