The majority of students are well below the poverty level, facing difficulties that we should not ask children to face alone. They come to school eager to learn, but often become frustrated with the work. My job as an educator is to remind them that THEY CAN DO IT! I try to instill in them the importance of education and how their education is a key to their future. The majority are learning English as a second language, helping their parents learn English and translating for them as well. Living in poverty increases their chances of dropping out, this is why I feel that fifth grade is such a vital year; a year to open their eyes to the world of opportunity that lies before them. We are lucky at our school to have an Interwrite board. I am looking forward to my students having more opportunities to use this tool with the interactive games that I am requesting. I believe that they will see that learning can be fun and engaging.
