I have been a teacher for 6 years and I have learned the importance of educating the whole child. I love teaching Math, but I love watching my students grow socially and emotionally. The Breathe for Change training will grant me the certification to really enhance the mindfulness strategies and practices that I currently use in my classroom. Outside of teaching math, I teach students awareness and ways to self-regulate their emotions. When a student is facing intense emotions, research shows they will not learn properly.
"You helped me fix my emotions like when I go off on my classmates you tell me to go out and take a break or ask do I need to call one of my parents to fix the situation"-5th Grade student. The amount of trauma students face greatly impacts their academic success. I am dedicated to preparing the future generations to be successful in all aspects of life. When you learn to constructively deal with emotions you will have a better learning environment. Students become ready to tackle the academic challenges once they learn to respond (instead of react) to their internal challenges.
The unfortunate reality is that many of my students do not have the support outside of school to learn about their mental and emotional health. These tools empower student to advocate, love and care for themselves. These tools help our students to cope with the trauma that accompanies growing up in poverty as a result of racism and systemic oppression.
