My fifty 10th graders and 25 AP Language 11th and 12th graders live in a small suburban community near the shore and military bases. Some of our students are military kids, and others come from families who have been here for generations. We spend our days in a 9-12 comprehensive public high school that is looking to bring academic excellence to the forefront of what we do. Creating readers is a major step in helping our students see themselves as scholars and helping them achieve more with the new Common Core standards. Our school library is modest and our librarian is wonderful, but she can't buy all the books she'd love for us to have, and there's never enough for multiple copies for students to read the same book.
