I teach grades 6 - 12 in a very small rural school in the central Sierra Nevada mountains. While my students are often limited by economic instability, they have learned very positive lessons about what really matters in life. The needs of our small town have brought us closer together, and the sense of community found in Greeley Hill is truly inspiring. Recently, community members have really reached out to help families effected by the Detwilder Fire. In my classroom I encourage these strong community values, while also trying to give them the academic and world knowledge they will need to succeed as adults. They are largely sheltered from larger society, and this makes Greeley Hill a really excellent place to raise kids. Yet, it can also lead them to miss out on the technology and opportunities common in urban areas. That is what I try to provide for the students in my classroom -a safe window into the world.
