My Students: My twelve students are all eager to learn and master the English language in both oral (speaking and listening) and written (reading and writing) forms. I teach in a high-poverty high school in New York City. My students range from 9th to 12th grade, and their home languages include Spanish, Bengali and Russian. They are all at the beginner level in English. Some have been in this country for just a few days or months, while others have struggled for two or more years with acquiring the language. Although we now have instituted a comprehensive program of small ESL classes and support in content area classes, most of them rarely practice English once they leave school. They live in families and communities where their home languages predominate.
