My students will be able to relate to the themes in these books which include holding on to hope during difficult circumstances. The characters in these books are highly engaging and relatable. Georgina in How to Steal a Dog is desperate. Her father left their family and then they were evicted from their home. She and her brother wait in the car they live in while her mom works two jobs. When everything is going wrong, she learns what is really right in the world. In Maniac Magee, themes revolve around racism and homelessness and in Esperanza Rising, perseverance and hope.
