Providing students with access to and classroom instruction focused on ukuleles will give them a deeper understanding of musical concepts, while also supplying an alternate vehicle for accessing the music curriculum. As students expand their use of the creative process, it is important to provide students with the tools and supplies they need to be successful, both in the general music and performance-based classes. Ukuleles provide easier access to the creative process for many students, as they are smaller than other accompaniment instruments (piano, guitar, etc) and are much less expensive to purchase and maintain. As the focus of music education continues to shift towards student creativity, it is important to provide students with many different paths to success. Using ukuleles in conjunction with specific curriculum goals (ie arranging & writing songs, exploring melody & harmony, etc) will allow students greater opportunities for everyday music-making.
