The students in Project Discover grades 5 and 6 are children much like Shirley Temple Wong, the main character in the book In the Year of the Boar and Jackie Robinson. Most of these children and their families are first or second generation immigrants from Mexico, South America, and Asia. They have lived the life of Shirley and experienced many of the challenges this fictional character met. What is amazing, is to hear the stories my students tell as they read about Shirley and relate similar experiences of feelings they have had. The Project Discover class is a gifted and talented class for students who have demonstrated high academic ability and performance, but who are still learning the English language. These children are incredible to work with, and I value every moment we have together. They truly teach me more about life and living everyday.
