My kids go to a huge high school that doesn't have a lot of money for things like fancy furniture. You know the hard seats connected to hard desks by heavy metal tubing? We have thousands of those. My students are bright and capable of learning, but many come from a tough part of town and often don't get enough sleep at night. I'd like to keep them on their toes, so to speak, with these exercise ball chairs. They said that one of the main reasons they fall asleep in calculus class was that the desks are so hard, and suggested that exercise balls might keep them from falling asleep (since they would roll off if they started to doze off). One of the most dangerous things to ask someone to do all day in this modern age of obesity is to sit all day, but that's what my students have to do. It's hard on them. I'd like my class to be a break from the normal 8 hour slog. It might even make calculus more fun.
