Every year my students enjoy arts integration projects in various subjects that help them express themselves is various ways. Many of them are ESOL students so this allows them the opportunity to show their learning in nonverbal ways. This year my concern is for their emotional well being. During this difficult time my students are affected economically and emotionally.
Journaling has been an important part of our language arts lessons in the past. This year we will create accordian journals with your help. The paper will be used for the inside foldable pages, the popsicle sticks help to crease the folds and will be used as handles for yes/no feeling cards. The construction paper will be used for the outside covers and inside pockets. The scissors are needed to cut the covers, pockets and tissue. The glue is needed to adhere the covers, pockets, felt shapes and tissue for decorating the journal covers and pages.
These supplies will help my students and I create accordion journals and abc phonemic awareness journals. These hands-on activities can build a sense of community as we record our daily learning, express our emotions through engaging art and reinforce the skills and strategies learned. When the hands are on, the minds are on.
