I currently teach mixed-ability 6th and 8th graders in a suburban Chicago middle school with about 40% low income-students. My students are smart, thoughtful, and (usually) eager to please. Some love to read, but many don't. Our English curriculum is rigorous, but canonical, which makes our whole class novels (think To Kill a Mockingbird and Lord of the Flies) harder to access for my struggling readers. It is challenging to get even my more average students (who aren't motivated by grades) to read the required chapters at home. I fear that "reading" is becoming too synonymous with "homework" and even more narrowly, "work." I'd like to remind students that reading can be an adventure, an escape, even pleasurable again by giving them access to stories designed to appeal to the young adult mind: fast-paced plots with characters who are learning what it means to grow up.
