One of the best things about experiencing music class at school is the chance to be creative and learn in a less structured environment. There are no chairs or desks in my classroom, just an open room with lots of space to move to music, dance, sing, play circle games and instruments, engage in small group activities, and much, much more! My students love learning and having fun in music class, but it’s important for me to give them the structure they desperately need… and secretly want! Last year I created and pinned colorful characters to the wall, so they had something visual to help them know where their space was on the floor in my room. However, I know my students would greatly benefit from having a physical space to call their own. The addition of a large rug with designated spots for each student in my music classroom would help create fast and fluid transitions as well as teach students about personal space and boundaries. Having a space to call their own reminds them that they matter as an individual in my classroom and helps me promote a positive and productive learning environment. This has become increasingly important in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey in August of 2017 when many students at my school were displaced and did not have a place to call their own. By donating to my project, not only will you help me create a more structured environment for my students but a physical space for each and every child who enters my classroom.
