Students need to be comfortable when reading, offering them cushions to sit around the room with will allow for students to have the ability to choose where and how they are sitting. Additionally, having a classroom set of dictionaries will allow for students to utilize dictionaries for assessments, projects, reading, comprehension, and teaching writing conventions. Students will utilize these resources daily and for years to come to help grow their knowledge base and teach them to be lifelong learners. Students in the community have not had much experience with flexible seating previously. By allowing them to enjoy the process of reading through the choice of books, seating, and location within the room, my goal is to encourage these practices at home. Finally, my students are able to utilize a dictionary on their state standardized tests, knowing when and how to use a dictionary is KEY to their success. Currently, students have dictionaries and thesauruses combined, but these are not allowed on standardized tests and are outdated resources with a severe lack of age-appropriate language conventions that students in 4th grade need for appropriate rigor in their studies. Having Merriam Webster dictionaries available will allow students to have access to more current language use within their learning environment.
