I want to teach my kids financial literacy and unit rate all in one lesson. I plan on having my students being able to relate to their parents, on a personal level, when it comes to their energy bill. I will have my students "shop" for an energy company, by choosing selecting the best rate, plugging that into their power meters, and measuring consumption, through a lamp, over 7 days. There will be groups of, no more than 3, and each groups will have a different unit rate. In the end, they will share and compare their energy bills, put their findings in a table, create a linear equation and graph, select the best company, and write a statement about it. This project will show them that even slope, is used in life after the 8th grade. It's relative, and the parents can get involved.
