Students need diversity in their education. They need some books to be mirrors where they can see themselves in the story. They will be able to identify with the characters, setting, or plot. Students also need books that are windows for them. This gives them an opportunity to learn something new about those around them. Even 5 and 6 year-olds can develop empathy for those around them as they widen their perspective and learn to appreciate the diversity in the world. My students will be able to develop new perspectives as we discover diverse themes and apply them to our real lives.
