The Ravenous Teenage Reader is alive and well at my High School, a Title 1 school in metro-Atlanta. This is my first year in the public school classroom, and as an English teacher to an incredibly diverse group of teenagers, I have found (much to my surprise!)that, lurking beneath those "I hate reading" attitudes are backpacks stuffed with teenage trash novels that they cannot put down! My students pass these novels around like precious limited copies of forbidden manuscripts. Both boys and girls, my low-income book haters love a good story-- especially when I didn't assign it.
