I have a wonderful classroom of energized, motivated, and persistent learners. Many of my students are first generation Americans and speak a variety of languages at home. Our school is a small public school in a working-class neighborhood. About 70% of the students receive free or reduced lunch. My 3rd graders have made the switch from "learning to read" to "reading to learn," and participate in many authentic learning projects in our classroom. They are inquisitive and are eager to learn about the world around them, but often don't have the resources (newspapers, Internet, or access to a public library) at home, or are unable to read and understand adult non-fiction text. As a school we focus on specific reading comprehension strategies each month and strive to involve families in students' learning as much as possible.
