These mentor texts will allow my students to model their own writing from amazing pieces of children's literature. Mentor texts are written pieces that serve as an example of good writing for student writers. The texts are read for the purpose of studying the author's craft, or the way the author uses words and structures the writing. One of my favorite authors, Penny Kittle says, "I believe each of my students must craft an individual reading life of challenge, whim, curiosity, and hunger. I believe in the collecting, noticing, living work of designing lessons to empower writers. I believe teachers provide vision for students; we live a belief in their success every day we teach." Help me craft a love of reading and writing in my young and impressionable sixth graders in hopes that it lasts a lifetime.
