A literature-rich classroom is a gift that every child should be blessed to enjoy. Special education can often focus so strongly on filling in gaps in achievement or learning that we can lose focus on the joy and love for reading. My students deserve to have a large, diverse library that is representative of them, that encourages them to grow, that fosters creativity, and that challenges them.
I want my students to be able to open any book in my room and access it independently or with help. I do not want to limit them to lower-level books because of reading level or disability. All children should have access to all books and the resources that they need to enjoy them. I look forward to reading high-quality books to my students through virtual learning, through asynchronous pre-recorded videos, through in-class small groups, through full-class book studies, and through independent reading. My students deserve to feel the adventure, the joy, and the full range of emotions that characters lead them through. They deserve to explore nonfiction biographies and fictional worlds. I can't wait to fill my classroom library with books that entice them to gain the skills and access independently. Thank you for helping make my vision a reality and thank you for blessing my students with the tools to develop a lifelong love for reading.
