These books will continue to enrich the diversity of the books in my classroom library. Every week I book talk four different books with my students, and they love to rush over to my classroom library when we're done and grab a copy to read for themselves. As I have shared my excitement about books with my students, my students' excitement has grown, too, and I want nothing more than for my students to see themselves represented within the pages of a good book--whether it's a traditional novel, a novel in verse, or a graphic novel. Books are amazing tools that allow us to see ourselves in text and view life through the eyes of others not like us--books build empathy and compassion, and it's the best feeling in the world when my students--especially my struggling readers--come up to me and ask me for a book. Just this week, I had a student, who has struggled to finish a book at all this year, approach me to ask for a specific title that I had just book-talked in class. She has come to me each day this week to tell me where she is in the book, and we talk about it. Through books, I can show my students that they matter because they see themselves in the pages of a book. As I engage in conversation with my kids about the books they're reading, we get to practice critical thinking skills under the guise of two book-nerds hashing it out. There is an excitement about books among my students that I have not seen before, and it all stems from the books that I have provided for them on the shelves of my library. These new books will only deepen their learning and excitement for the written word.
