Many of the students have family and financial difficulties but it doesn't stop them from setting goals in a life that seems to be an uphill battle. The challenge of being at a newer school is that traditions are not quite in place. The school is still finding its identity; a struggle that many of the students can relate to. Many of the students have low income households and many of my students have parents who never attended college. My students haven't had the experience of going to art museums, musicals, plays, concerts or other events that give them an idea of the culture around us. They know they are missing out on something but can't really explain what. They fill the void with cell phones and music but they need more. They need recognition.
