It's difficult getting many students to read, even AP students. Kids are strapped for time or motivation. Our school library's budget is minimal, and I've found that having a classroom library is essential to encouraging students to read. All of my students are encouraged (and required) to read independent novels, and our school library (and my own classroom library) have a limited supply of the books they need, and many of the titles don't exist in the school. The books on my shelves currently are titles I've collected from my own purchases from garage sales, discount book stores, etc., but we need more - more titles, and more copies of specific titles for literature circles. My goal is to have a variety of genres, and a healthy representation of multicultural literature, time periods, and authors.
