My school district is beginning the 2020-2021 school year virtually and we will be doing virtual for the first nine weeks at least. This will definitely be a new challenge for my firsties, but I know that being hands-on while still learning at home will help them a great deal! I have chosen these materials to help me create a classroom take-home kit for them. The kits will have whiteboards, Unifix cubes, dominos, headphones, primary composition journals, and magnetic letters. Many of my students will be at daycare or at home with other siblings that are virtually learning as well; the headphones will help them focus a little more on what is happening in the virtual class, as well as with reading activities online, the whiteboards will be used for language arts and solving math problems, and the Unifix cubes will help students be able to better visualize and have a hands-on experience with math problems. The magnetic letters will help them visualize and manipulate sight and spelling words during word study. With your generous support, I can fill a "portable desk" (plastic tote) with hands-on materials and tech support our first grade scholars will need to thrive in this upcoming turbulent school year, whether they are at home or in the classroom. I just want to make sure they have everything they need to be successful. A lot of the students in my school qualify for free or reduced-price school meals. My students lack access to educational materials due to the high cost of living and the low income of their parents. This also puts a strain on me as well trying to ensure equity and equal learning opportunity within my classroom.
