I teach in a very low-income area in Southern California. Most of the students at my school (90% or more) are on government assistance programs and/or receive free or reduced lunch. Many will not consider going on to college after high school because their family doesn't have the money to send them. If going on to college, most will not enter science-related fields. Females are still under-represented in college in science disciplines. Recently, our school was named as one of the worst-performing schools in the state. There is increased pressure now for our students to perform on high stakes tests.
