My students, like all others, have been affected by COVID-19. Over 50% of my students are recipients of the free and reduced lunch program. I desire to give all of my students access to amazing music and movement activities that spark a desire in them to become lifelong musicians. Music Expression (OAS Standard 3) is one of the standards I will teach my students using the materials. Many of my students have spent a lot of time at home due to the nature of the pandemic, and movement keeps them engaged while providing a healthy outlet for their energy, which is a tremendous need for children affected by the pandemic . Movement is all about rhythm, which is at the heart of playing music, singing, and dancing. Students will use the drum, rainbow piano, and ribbon bells to practice rhythmic patterns and melodies. Many students will benefit because these initial experiences with music will foster a desire to learn to play an instrument. The scarves, parachute, and bean bag activities allow students to respond (OAS Standard 1: Language of Music) to the beat or rhythm in music by skipping, galloping, twirling, hopping, tossing, and other movements. When students are moving, they are engaged. Students that are engaged in music activities are students who learn to love music, which will have enhanced the rest of their lives beyond the pandemic. Many students will benefit by learning to listen to and enjoy music, which is a big part of OAS Standard 4, Music Appreciation. This is why my students need access to a listening center with a variety of types of music they can discuss and begin to recognize basic features of. The paper saver would add organization to their materials. These materials will help us finish the year strong musically.
