Student-centered learning starts by first letting students choose the seating style that best fits their learning style. My goal is to create a classroom environment that meets the various and unique needs of my students with social-emotional and learning disabilities. Students work best in a warm, welcoming, and safe environment. I hope to create an environment where my students have options to move around the classroom to do their work and communicate in a comfortable setting. If students are comfortable, they are more motivated and engaged. I believe that flexible seating is needed because it increases focus, collaboration, engagement, motivation, and provides sensory input. My students need flexible seating such as bean bag chairs, saucer chairs and floor seats to increase their attention on learning. Students will have a choice of seats based on the type of lessons, such as whole group, small group, partner work and one-to-one learning. My teaching includes classroom meetings and we will continue to have meetings to discuss what is working and what is not working with our new seating options. Students will also be expected to reflect on their learning style and which seating options would be best to meet those needs. Another implementation strategy is to have students create goals based on their seating and evaluate their learning. The results will help students and the teacher decide on the most appropriate seating options.
