My reading students are 9th and 10th grade at risk readers. This means they are reading near a 3rd grade level. This puts them at risk for failure across all their high school subjects and as we all are grimly aware, functional illiteracy is a lead indicator of high school dropout, future poverty and criminal involvement. Most students dropout between their 10th and 11th grade year so a high school reading intervention is often the last chance to grab students and get them the skills they need to become lifelong readers and learners. My students are low level readers attending their neighborhood school, which also happens to be a math and science magnet school. They are marginalized in a building whose resources go almost completely to the math and science magnet students. My students often do not feel comfortable reading or working in the school library so the more resources I have for them, the better!
