My students are mostly below the poverty level. They come from families where chaos rules, out of necessity. Their parents are working minimum wage jobs, trying to keep a roof over their head and food on the table. The routines that students thrive on in school, are absent at home and this hampers student success at every level. School is their safe haven and when they don't have basic supplies, their anxiety overrides that feeling of safety and success. I work with English as a Second/New Language students, many of whom come to us with no formal education in their home country. 60% of my students are refugees from Burma and the remainder come from similar situations in Somalia, Iraq, Nepal, etc. For many of them, our school district provides the only full meal they will get in a day. All of this is to say that your support makes a difference in their lives. So, thank you for considering our class!
