At the end of each year, I ask my students to fill out a survey for me. One of the questions on it is "What didn't you like/What do you wish I had done differently this year?" The majority of the responses I receive is "I didn't like the books we read this year. I wish I could pick the book." Choice is one of the most powerful teaching techniques a teacher can employ to engage students. I will use these books to enrich my classroom library. By using a Readers' Workshop model, students will get to choose what they want to read and use those books to show mastery of skills being taught in class.
